Barbara has earned the designations Qualified Pension Administrator (QPA) and Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) from the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries.  She has participated in the pension industry for over 40 years.  During her college years she interned for the Social Security Administration.  Barbara began her pension career in Rhode Island and has been providing pension administration services in Santa Barbara, California since 1981.

Prior to founding ABA, Barbara worked for Pentabs, a national pension software firm, and its parent company, Corbel & Co., a national retirement plan document, software and pension training firm, as their Director of Pension Services and Quality Control departments. Barbara's breadth of industry experience includes teaching pension administration and software systems to administration firms around the country, speaking on technology and how to automate the compliance aspects of pension administration, communicating complex compliance aspects of qualified retirement plans, and more.  She has managed over one thousand qualified retirement plans during her career.  She has also held a Life Agent license in California and is a former Notary Public.

Barbara has owned and operated ABA since 1991.  Her breadth of experiences provide her with a great depth of knowledge and expertise.  Professionally, Barbara is a member of the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries, the National Institute of Pension Administrators, the Society of Human Resource Management, the Santa Barbara Human Resource Association, the Western Pension & Benefits Conference, NAWBO and ProVisors.  Barbara is the author of the book series - 401(k) Essentials and 403(b) Essentials.

Liz-Ann earned her Liberal Arts Degree from Santa Monica City College in Santa Monica, California. She began her career in the pension industry in 1979 with The Wyatt Co. (Watson Wyatt Worldwide), a world wide consulting firm located in Washington, D.C. In 1991 she moved to California and joined Pentabs and then ABA, Inc. where she served as a Pension Administrator. In 1993 she joined Mercer Global Advisors, also located in Santa Barbara, CA, as a Pension Consultant and Technical Advisor. She rejoined ABA, Inc. in March of 2011. 

Liz-Ann reports directly to the President and CEO of ABA. She is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day recordkeeping of many retirement plans.  She is experienced in both defined contribution plans and defined benefit pension plans. As our Senior Administrator, Liz-Ann ensures the timely and accurate delivery of our services by working closely with our staff of highly trained pension professionals. Liz-Ann is a member of the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA) and has earned the credential, Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA).

Philip comes to the pension industry after a career spent in the retail and e-commerce industries. Starting with Eddie Bauer, Inc. as a merchant, Philip broadened his e-commerce buying and business background at Amazon.com, Drugstore.com, and finally with Delivery Agent responsible for the buying and management of multiple online retail stores including HBO, Showtime, FX, CBS, Fox TV, and The Simpsons.

Working closely with our Senior Pension Manager, Philip is responsible for participant loans and distributions.  Philip assists the staff in handling administration support.  He is also tasked with the maintenance of our data collection process, secure web portal and other technology based tasks.  Philip is a native of Santa Barbara and attended the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Michelle has worked in the pension industry for over 30 years.  Prior to joining ABA, she was employed at Certified Pension Consultants (CPC).  Michelle began working for CPC as a word processor and gradually learned the more technical aspects of the business.  In March of 1992, Accrued Benefit Administrators, Inc. (ABA) acquired CPC and Michelle joined ABA at the time of the merger. 

 

Michelle is a Benefits Administrator handling our health and welfare benefit clients and all plan documents and related supporting materials. Her other duties include billing, banking and administration support.

 

She successfully completed the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA) Pension Administrator’s and Daily Valuation Courses. She has an Associates Degree from Ottumwa Heights Junior College in Ottumwa, Iowa and attended the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Pat is the Senior Trust Administrator at ABA, Inc. and has worked in the pension service industry since 1985.  When Barbara founded ABA, Inc. in 1991, Pat joined her and has been involved in ABA's growth since the beginning.   

 

She received her BS degree in Business Administration, with a minor in accounting, from the University of North Dakota.  After moving to California from Minnesota she was employed by Pentabs, a national pension software firm, as the Supervisor of Customer and Contract Administration.  Pat and Barbara worked together at Pentabs. 

Pat's main focus is the asset reconciliation of our clients' pension plan investments.  This function is called trust accounting.  It is crucial for the reporting of plan assets and the annual income and expenses of the plan's trust on the Form 5500 series.  Her other duties include ABA's accounts receivables and payables as well as client billing.
